Gender inequality in an “Equal” environment

Lithuania, as a part of the former Soviet Union, has long-standing history perceived equality for women in workplace. Women played an equal role economic production it was constitutional expectation that all citizens had both right and obligation to work. Consequently, at time independence 1990 levels participation workplace including managerial professional were much higher than other western European countries. In architecture, achieved parity terms numbers, but this did not transfer into aspects activity. Drawing on qualitative survey interview data from 31 Lithuanian architects, our findings show, despite historical emphasis equality, existence “critical mass” profession adoption EU gender policy, position remains poor with clear evidence sex discrimination, harassment, lack opportunities career advancement.
